01The problem
The salary promise connects employers and employees. But without additional cover, it ends when continued salary payments stop.
Salary stops. Life’s expenses don’t.One in four experiences occupational disability during their working life. An office job offers no immunity: in 2024, mental health or nervous system conditions caused 38% of cases.
Why individual income protection is often out of reach Source: GDV, 7 facts about occupational disability insurance (German), updated 12 August 2025. The one-in-four figure is based on people with private occupational disability insurance.02The employer’s decision
With BonusLeben, you decide how far your salary promise goes. Together, we define the employee group, level of cover and funding. BonusLeben handles implementation.
For employers
BonusLeben turns your commitment as an employer into tangible support. For employees and applicants.
Comprehensive income protection may be possible for less than 1% of payroll. The actual premium depends on your workforce, occupational profile and level of cover.
BonusLeben prepares your quotation and supports implementation, employee communications and ongoing administration.
For employees
Pre-existing conditions do not automatically lead to extra premiums or rejection. A short actively-at-work declaration is sufficient for access to the group scheme.
The agreed monthly benefit helps pay for rent, everyday life and future plans if the often underestimated risk of occupational disability becomes a reality.
BonusLeben pays when an employee can perform their most recent occupation at only 50% of their previous capacity or less. They are not required to take up a different occupation.
Depending on the company’s scheme, employees can top up their employer-funded cover themselves.
03The benefits
If ill health or an accident leaves an employee able to perform their most recent occupation at only half their previous capacity or less, BonusLeben pays after the agreed waiting period.
Benefits begin
Cover is based on the most recent occupation. Standard waiting period: 180 days.
Monthly benefit · up to 10 years
BonusLeben pays the agreed monthly benefit while occupational disability continues: for up to ten years, but no later than the employee’s 68th birthday.
Afterwards · lump sum
If occupational disability remains permanent at the end of the monthly benefit period, a lump sum of up to ten times the annual benefit follows, limited to the remaining years until age 68.
At a glance
Payments equal the insured monthly benefit, capped at 75% of current gross salary and €20,000 per month.
04A cost example

monthly income protection in this example
Example: age 44, commercial occupation, €4,000 gross monthly salary, a group of at least 50 people and a 180-day waiting period. Here, a €40 monthly premium provides €2,500 in monthly occupational disability benefits. A salary increase would also incur employer contributions.

Frequently asked questions
BonusLeben is an employer group insurance scheme. It protects the income of employees who can no longer carry out their occupation because of ill health or an accident, with a monthly benefit followed by a lump sum in the event of permanent occupational disability.
Companies can insure clearly defined groups of employees. The options depend in particular on group size, occupational profile and the desired level of cover.
There is no individual medical underwriting for group cover with monthly occupational disability benefits of up to €20,000. To the best of their knowledge, the employer confirms three points: employees are physically and mentally able to do their work; in the past twelve months they have not been unable to work due to illness or accident for more than 20 consecutive working days; and during that period they have not changed their working hours, duties or workplace for health reasons. If these points cannot be confirmed, we discuss admission with the insurer. An existing occupational disability cannot be newly insured.
You agree a monthly occupational disability benefit to suit your workforce. In the event of a claim, we pay the insured benefit, capped at 75% of current gross salary and €20,000 per month. For example, with a gross salary of €3,000 and an insured benefit of €1,000, the monthly payment is €1,000.
If illness, an accident or a decline in physical or mental capacity beyond what is normal for their age leaves an employee able to perform their most recent occupation at only half their previous capacity or less, monthly benefits begin after the waiting period. The standard is 180 days; other waiting periods can be agreed. Monthly benefits do not require an additional minimum prognosis period. The employee is not required to take up a different occupation.
Monthly benefits continue during occupational disability for up to ten years, but no later than the employee’s 68th birthday. If a subsequent medical assessment confirms permanent occupational disability, a lump sum of up to ten times the annual benefit follows, limited to the remaining years until age 68. For example, occupational disability at age 50 means ten years of monthly benefits followed by a lump sum equal to eight annual benefits. Ongoing benefits stop when the employee returns to work. A lump sum already paid is not reclaimed if the employee later recovers.
The employer funds the agreed cover. Depending on the company’s scheme, employees can increase it at their own expense.
Employer-funded cover ends when the employee leaves the company. Continuing the cover privately is possible.
The policy initially runs for one year and generally renews for a further year at a time. Both parties have cancellation rights under the agreed terms. The insurer can cancel with three months’ notice before the end of the insurance year.
As little as possible. BonusLeben supports pricing, implementation, employee communications, enrolment and ongoing administration. Responsibilities are agreed with the company.
